More Than Architecture… It’s Collaboration

February 7, 2025 - Article
At Figurr, collaboration is more than a process—it’s a guiding principle that shapes how we design, build, and grow. Over the past three decades, we’ve worked closely with industry partners, communities, organizations, clients, and team members to create meaningful spaces that reflect shared visions and goals.

In this blog, we explore the many facets of our collaborative approach, from rebranding our identity as an Architects’ Collective to our partnerships with local communities, builders, and consultants. We reflect on how these relationships have allowed us to address complex challenges, preserve cultural heritage, and innovate in sustainable design.

Join us as we take a closer look at the projects, initiatives, and people that highlight the power of working together to shape spaces that inspire and serve communities.

At Figurr, our identity is rooted in our Architects’ Collective—a collaborative approach that values the unique ideas, skills, and cultures of each and every team member. Our growth has been driven by bringing together talented individuals who complement and elevate one another, creating a firm where everyone’s contributions matter.

When we rebranded in 2018, we chose to embrace a new identity that reflects our collective ethos. Inspired by many brainstorming sessions with our team, we collectively chose a name that honours our original partners while representing our multicultural and bilingual roots. Including “Collective” highlights our shared approach—no egos, just collaboration. Our five partners work alongside the team, fostering an open and inclusive environment where every voice is heard.

“... when we had to find a new name that represented our team and what we are about, we had a brainstorming session including everyone. The name had to mean the same thing in both languages and represent our diverse team.” - Bruno Morin, Partner, Figurr

We recognized that our greatest strength—and true differentiator—has always been our people. This understanding has shaped the values we bring to every project, fostering close connections with communities, consultants, and clients. By working together, we ensure each project reflects a shared vision and addresses the unique needs of those it serves.

For more than three decades, collaboration with communities has been central to our work at Figurr. Partnering with organizations to make meaningful contributions has been a guiding principle, helping us foster relationships that have a lasting impact.

In 2024, we introduced the Figurr Architects Cree Education Fund in partnership with the Eenou-Eeyou Community Foundation, raising $7,000 to support Indigenous youth in pursuing their educational goals. This initiative reflects the trust and relationships we’ve built with Cree communities in Northern Quebec through decades of collaboration on various projects.

“This serves as a clear example of how organizations can work together to make a positive impact in the Cree Nation and for Cree youth...” - Dr. Sarah Pash, Chair of the Eenou-Eeyou Community Foundation.

This year, we also had the privilege of introducing youth at CAGIS (Canadian Association for Girls in Science) to the field of architecture. Together, we explored the role of architects, pathways into the profession, and even tried out a hands-on design activity.

“It is such a privilege to share our experiences and hopefully inspire the next generation to love architecture.” – Brynne Campbell, PhD, Marketing Director

Initiatives like these allow us to connect with and learn from the communities we serve. Engaging with the next generation allows us to share knowledge while gaining fresh perspectives and ideas that inspire our ongoing work.

The process of building something from the ground up is never straightforward, nor is it the work of just one person or one organization. Architecture is inherently collaborative, relying on the expertise of consultants, builders, and designers to transform vision into reality. These industry partners are instrumental in making the spaces we create not only functional but also meaningful and impactful for our clients and their communities.

The 159 Forward Avenue project required a collaborative approach to address its sustainability goals and urban context. Working alongside McDonald Brothers Construction, engineers, and consultants, the team navigated challenges together, focusing on solutions that balanced environmental responsibility with functionality. This collaborative effort was instrumental in shaping a residential building that serves the community while prioritizing sustainable design practices.

In Cote-Saint-Luc, Quebec the Aquatic Centre project included the consolidation and design of new sports, recreation, and aquatics facilities. This required extensive coordination among the client, contractors, and sub-trades to create a welcoming and efficient sports complex. The team worked closely throughout the process, maintaining open communication to ensure the design respected the design vision while meeting the practical needs. Collaboration played a key role in addressing the complexities of the project and ensuring its success.

“I need you to know that we love this building. Every single time I walk through the doors, my heart lifts. It is bright, and feels vast. I love the luxuriously high ceilings. I adore - ADORE - the atrium. We had a lot of latitude given that it was design-build, which we really, really appreciated.” - Tanya Abramovitch Former City Manager and Library Director/Directrice Générale et Directrice de la Bibliothèque, City of/Ville de Côte Saint-Luc

The Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute reflects the importance of collaboration in culturally significant projects. Drawing from the Cree people’s traditional longhouse, the shaptuan, the building’s design aligns with the Institute’s mission to preserve and share Cree culture with future generations.

Roberto Campos, Partner at Figurr, recalls the impact of this project: “The Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute introduced me to the type of collaborative design process I value most in this profession.”

At Figurr, everyone’s voice counts. We are privileged to work with exceptional consultants and team members. Working together, we can bring our clients’ vision to life.

The Cross Lake Education Authority faced a need for expanded and improved educational facilities to tackle overcrowding and support its growing population of 8,000+. Existing schools, designed for 1,350 students, accommodated 1,741 students—well beyond capacity. In response, Figurr collaborated with community leaders and members to plan a new high school, additions and renovations to two existing schools, and essential teacher housing. These projects aimed to alleviate overcrowding while fostering a comprehensive and inclusive educational environment.

A similar process was followed for the newly completed Chisasibi Secondary School in Quebec. Figurr’s approach, in this project and in all projects, was rooted in collaboration and respect. Through participatory brainstorming sessions with students, teachers, staff, administrators, and parents, we worked closely with the community to develop a program that reflected their shared vision and would serve their unique needs.

“I’m happy to say I was part of the process as it was truly a real learning experience for me. I always mention to anyone I meet When we talk about the new high school and even to the new Council members about the way in which the project, design and plans for the new highschool came to fruition. I can honestly say that most of us felt heard during the whole process. As it is often said, “Actions speak louder than words.” And your actions are proof of that. Well done! Thanks again.” - Daisy House, Chief, Cree Nation of Chisasibi

Collaboration with First Nations has consistently been an important pillar of our work, enriching our team’s knowledge and understanding while fostering designs that honour cultural heritage and reflect the unique needs of these communities.

A defining feature of our team is the collaboration between our Ottawa and Montreal offices. Operating across two provinces, major cities, and in two languages has strengthened our approach, bringing diverse perspectives and experiences to our work. This dynamic has allowed us to embrace opportunities for growth, but it also reminds us that there is always more to learn.

To support ongoing development within our team, we’ve implemented internal learning initiatives that keep us engaged and informed. Monthly in-house presentations provide a platform to share project updates, fostering transparency and collective problem-solving. Our lunchtime Archi-Talks sessions dive into construction practices, encouraging dialogue on techniques and materials. Along with hundreds of hours of professional development, these initiatives empower our team to innovate in areas such as wood construction, prefabrication, and energy-use reduction.

We believe learning is a lifelong process, and our commitment to growth ensures that our projects and practices continue to evolve.
