While retaining the specific identity of the Cree culture, Figurr has planned specialized classes reserved for teaching the Cree language as well as for handicapped children, flexible workshop and teaching spaces, a gymnasium as well as a multipurpose room.

This school extension in Waskaganish supplies a demand for a growing population as well as for adult education, currently housed in the high school building. In fact, this project provides two major request which are an extension and a redevelopment of the existing building.

The two storey expansion, dedicated to grades 1, 2 and 3, uses a modest material palette of architectural block and aluminum cladding. This integrates well with the local vernacular as well as with the existing construction but still maintains its unique identity. The choices of the colour has been used to accentuate some elements and provide a dynamic environment while improving the existing building’s with the brutal exterior. This new and welcoming environment encourages children to aspire to higher goals and continue their education.
