Whapmagoostui Community Pool & Youth Centre

Whapmagoostui, QC
Cree Nation Government
Whapmagoostui, Cree for “place of the beluga”, is the northernmost Cree village in Quebec, located at the mouth of the Great Whale River on the coast of Hudson Bay in Nunavik, Quebec.

First Nations Community Centre Whapmogoostui

The community is only accessible by air and, in late summer, by boat. This new 13,000 ft2 Community Pool & Youth Centre in Whapmagoostui will provide a 25m x 10m 4-lane indoor pool, locker rooms and showers for men and women, a youth centre, a multi-function space, and administrative offices.

As with most northern development projects, this one will meet the specific challenges presented by construction in a severe climate. The choice of materials, the position and protection of glazing, the visibility and control of interior spaces were all considerations in the design.
