Based on the Cree Regional Authority’s design criteria, this building was planned with the notion of durability, security and natural materials in mind.
The Cree community of Waskaganish is located at the intersection of James Bay and the Rupert River. Situated on a site adjacent to the community’s existing police station, the new fire station houses the fire trucks and first responder’s vehicles that serve the local community for both road and water emergencies, as well as fires.

The steel structure was finished with a combination of wood and brick exterior cladding. There are four vehicle bays, three of them drive-through. The support spaces for the firemen are located on two floors, and include a lounge, a kitchen, a recreation / fitness room, a training room, storage, washrooms and offices.

The metal roof line wraps across the perimeter walls of the building articulating and framing the buildings’ lateral facades. The building was developed using the Cree Regional Authority standards for fire halls. It also houses new administrative spaces such as offices and meeting spaces for the community’s First Responder Unit.
